The Pastoral Sampler quilt is designed in the style of antique American samplers from the 1800’s. There are 9 separate patterns (or months) to complete the quilt. Several techniques are used in the quilt construction. Complete machine and traditional hand appliqué directions, along with helpful sewing techniques are given in the GENERAL DIRECTIONS section in Month #1. The saw tooth border and Log Cabin blocks use Foundation Paper Piecing. Two narrow design rows use strip piecing techniques. Embroidery stitches used for the quilt are chain stitch, backstitch, French knot, and Satin stitch. The Alphabet Lawn is constructed using YLI Wash-A-Way paper, printed with a lined grid, and sewn in the style of postage stamp quilts. A quick new postage stamp sewing method is given, so that fabric blocks remain soft and pliable to sew through, after rinsing dissolves the entire paper pattern.
