About Teresa
Teresa, the founder and president of Homespun Hearth, grew up in a family of 7 girls, and so home-economics was key to keeping the household functioning and Teresa was always drawn to working with textiles. Her grandmother taught her how to knit, crochet, and needlepoint, and even touched some on the world of quilting. From her early years, Teresa loved to sew her own clothing, and she enjoyed home dec - her bedroom was her canvas, and she was always creating new curtains, pillows and table toppers. Her very first "quilt" which she made as a young teen in 1976, was a very fluffy tied quilt just two pieces of tonal white fabric the size of her bed, with a whopping batting sandwiched between, that she tied with purple ribbons her favorite color! As a young adult, Teresa also wrote, published, and taught classes from the book Seams Sew Simple Serging Techniques for the Home Decorator. Teresa later received her BA degree in Business Management/Marketing from the University of Maryland, and for several years was a "suit" in the corporate world. Teresa met her husband in 1982, they married in 1986, and that's when their adventures around the world began.
Before embarking on a vacation to sail in the Greek Islands in 1990, Teresa purchased a How To Quilt book from a quilt shop in the small town of Harrogate, England where they lived. During the vacation, Teresa taught herself to make a pieced quilt by following the instructions in the book - without actually even touching any fabric. She was so excited as she followed the steps on how to quilt, that as soon as she returned from their vacation, she purchased the required quilting fabrics and made four Baby Kings Road quilts - and she was hooked.
Teresa's husband, an officer in the US Air Force, kept their growing family on their toes with 14 moves during his career, so Teresa searched for a way to fuse her education with her new-found quilting passion, while at the same time have the flexibility to move on demand, and keep her growing family of 3 boys needs number one. She made quilts to sell on consignment at local gift shops, and found this to be very rewarding. As the internet started to gain momentum in the mid-90's, Teresa realized she could harness the power of the internet and still meet the demands required of her family, and thus the concept of Homespun Hearth was born. Beginning in Teresa's home office, Homespun Hearth rapidly grew as a number one online quilt shop, and she quickly had to transform her husband's garage into a fully functioning quilt warehouse, as well as add to her staff to keep up with the demand.
In 2005, her husband's career moved them to Colorado, and they took this opportunity to find the perfect landing spot for their family and Homespun Hearth. After many house-hunting trips from California to Colorado, they finally found the perfect location a piece of land in Monument, Colorado that not only has the home they need for their family, but a huge warehouse as well. In just a few short years, the new space was simply not enough, and so the quest for a larger warehouse was on .. and we expect this to be a continuous cycle as our presence on the web garners new quilters every day. Teresa's husband has now retired from the air force and moved on to another career, but they now call Colorado home .. and Homespun Hearth is there to stay.
